01 September 2015, LONDON – Following the announcement of Liberty Specialty Markets’ (LSM) partnership with leading international charity WaterAid in May, employees selected WaterAid’s Madagascar Project as their specific programme from among the organisation’s initiatives in 26 countries.
Madagascar is a beautiful island off the southeast coast of Africa but it is home to 10.9 million people without access to clean water, over 12 million without adequate sanitation, and 4,000 children die every year from illness caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation.
LSM aims to donate a significant sum over three years to the charity, specifically supporting the initiative in Madagascar which aims to provide all rural communities with safe water, toilets and hygiene education.
Acting as part of LSM's corporate social responsibility programme, staff will also undertake a range of fundraising activities as well as volunteering to support the charity.
Nick Metcalf, President and Managing Director of LSM said: "We entered into the partnership with WaterAid in June and gave our employees the opportunity to choose where we would focus our efforts in order to have them feel engaged with a specific programme of support.
"It is astounding that 10.9 million people don't have access to what here in the UK we take completely for granted; clean, safe water and sanitation facilities. We hope that we can really make a difference to the lives of the people living in Madagascar and help prevent tragic and needless deaths from using dirty water."
