Our claims outcomes - doing the right thing

When hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico in 2017, our office in the region became our local teams’ home – quite literally. Like all the other premises in the area, the Liberty office experienced loss of power and electricity.

We also used the Liberty corporate plane to bring in aid and supplies to speed up recovery – one of the first companies to do so.

Despite widespread disruption, including no power or water on the island, our team progressed to settle over 80% of claims in 3 months, ahead of the market. 

Our people helped Puerto Rico to get back on its feet.

Due to our outlook and helping the community in which we live, our business in the market has grown sevenfold in five years.

When the biggest earthquake in Japan’s history hit in 2011, one of the largest buyers of catastrophe cover in the world and itself a mutual company, Zenkyoren, made an early cash call to their reinsurers.

A number of the leads on the programme would not respond to Zenkyoren’s calls until all claims details had been received. As Japan was looking to start recovering from a significant natural disaster, time was of the essence.

Liberty Specialty Markets did not lead on the programme at the time, but took the decision not to wait and paid our proportion of the claim in total. We were the first to do so. The market ultimately followed.

Helping people in adversity is part of our heritage. Our stability and demonstration of longer term customer thinking resulted in us taking a lead position on Zenkyoren’s programme, which we still hold today.
