Box of Soaps Artwork

This object was submitted by my grandmother as part of an ongoing painting series depicting paintings of submitted objects which have sentimental value.

Sharing this object with me, she reveals her love for her belongings and their personal significance as a way of mapping her memories and connections with her family. This piece depicts a box of soaps which she used to let me play with as a child. The work is painted from a photograph she sent me, taken from above. The soaps are half used and the box is falling apart. Once painted the worn shapes and soft pastel colours reduce the image to simple abstract forms; evoking the innocent feelings of joy and happiness I experienced when playing with them as a child.
