“I came with no expectation and still I feel disappointed”.

Simon Yates makes sculptural works using a mix of found materials and crafted objects, alongside painting and installation. He is interested in our everyday and the relationship to our surroundings, the often humorous experience of human interaction and society at large.

Yates’ work often references architecture and structures and how we interact and evolve within the built environment. It raises questions around the inside and outside, public and private space, what is hidden and what is revealed and our constructed reality. Yates’ investigates this through the deconstruction and dismantling of ideas, objects and experiences. By unpacking the layers and somehow altering the DNA, he aims to offer an alternative perspective where original meanings become problematic and open to interpretation.

Yates is interested in stripping away the value of an object and rendering it useless in its current form. This re-contextualising opens space for questioning. Within this context, he explores notions of uselessness, futility and the absurd. He investigates value and it’s associated meaning’s and look at value found within process rather than fixed outcomes. Similarly, Yates is interested in the notion of failure in the non-achievement of goals or as protest or as a resistance of conclusion or end result.

Simon Yates holds a BA in Fine Art from the Art Academy London
